NEW TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR 2009
With numerous updates on the new travel document requirements brought on by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), it's no wonder that so many travelers are confused and don't know what form of id they need to bring with them when they travel outside of the US. Below we have covered the most important points a traveler needs to do before visiting a country outside the US, but for the most accurate and up-to-date information we recommend consulting the U.S. Department of State website before you travel.
The following areas fall under the Western Hemisphere Travel Intiative requirments in 2009
- Canada
- Mexico
- Bermuda
- The 17 nations of the Caribbean
Please Note: The WHTI-compliant documents described below are acceptable for entry or re-entry into the United States. You may be required to present additional or different travel documents when entering foreign countries, including countries in the Western Hemisphere. Before you travel, make sure you know the entry requirements of the country you plan to visit. See Country Specific Information for more information on the country you are traveling to.
AIR TRAVEL
- All U.S. citizens traveling by air are required to present a passport book to enter or re-enter the United States.
LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.
Effective Sept. 26, 2006, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)adjusted its airport security screening procedures as follows:
1) Pre-Screening - Passengers may carry travel-size toiletries (3 ounce or less) that fit comfortably in ONE quart-size, clear plastic, zip-top bag through the security checkpoints.
2) Post-Screening - Passengers may bring items, including beverages and duty-free items, purchased in the secure gate area on-board the aircraft.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the U.S. is working to align its policies with those found in Canada and Europe, but some differences may currently exist. Airport Security Update: TSA Adjusts Liquid Ban
It is recommended that passengers arrive at the airport at least two hours before all domestic flights!
